Thursday Feb 4 – The SEEN

The SEEN is Sky Dragon’s one and only diverse and eclectic open stage for every age. Each Thursday we welcome you to share and enjoy the positive vibrations of poetry, music, dance, spoken word and whatever it is that you do. Discovering hidden talents of the Hamilton community, THE SEEN encourages you to express yourself and revive an old art movement happening in an entirely new century. Host Teal Booth and an ever-changing line-up of performers, visual artists and guest MC’s are guaranteed to keep the evening fresh. FREE ADMITTANCE, FREE EXPRESSION, FREE YOUR MIND! Friday Feb 5 – Lightmares with the Birthday Cakes and friends
8 pm
Lightmares are the masterminds behind the Millards’ garage shows in Sudbury. They make catchy rock music. The Birthday Cakes are trying their very best to make pop music weird again. This will be an evening of brotherly love and rock and roll goodness.

Saturday Feb 6 - Local Organic Farmer’s Market

Join us Saturdays at the Bread and Roses Cafe as local organic farmers and food activists Plan B offer great produce for sale. Get your
fresh organic veggies right in downtown Hamilton!

Saturday Feb 6 - Environment and the Future of Farming: A Fundraiser for Haiti
7pm – 10pm
IT’S BACK! Dinner & Discussion Night at the Bread & Roses Cafe Join Hamilton Eat Local for the “FEBRUARY IS FARM MONTH” launch event. Original Bread & Roses Chef Karen Burson teams up with current Chef Marg Ann Roorda to cook up a deluxe, Haitian-inspired menu using the surprising abundance of locally grown ingredients that are available even in this coldest month of the year. This evening’s proceeds will be directed towards Heifer Canada International’s Haitian rebuilding efforts. Tickets cost $40 per person, only $35 on or before February 5. Sunday February 7 – Lit Live
7:30pm – 10:00pm
Six writers bring their literary lines to Lit Live! Amy Jones will read from her collection of short stories entitled What Boys Like, published by Biblioasis. di Brandt presents Watermelon Syrup, a collaborative novel published by Wilfred Laurier Press. Marilyn Gear Pilling will read poems from The Bones of the World Begin to Show, a collection of poems from Black Moss Press. Sue Chenette brings us the insights of her book Slender Human Weight, poetry published by Guernica Editions. Vicky Delany reads from Winter of Secrets, new fiction from Poison Pen Press. David Derry shares with us his collection of satires called Sentimental Exorcisms, from Coach House Books.

Monday Feb 8 – Crafty Mondays
7 pm to 9 pm
Crafty Monday Nights have taken off. There’s usually a gang of us at the craft table, working on whatever projects we have (knitting, sewing, etc.). Come and join us, as we will carry on over the winter. Maybe that perfectly cozy sweater is in your plans? We’re at the Sky Dragon every Monday, and we’d love to see your crafty self.

Monday Feb 8 – Culture of Peace Network Night
7pm – 9pm
Join the Culture of Peace Network and the Peace Café staff for a network night for all involved in work for peace in Hamilton and beyond. The evening includes a roundtable, sharing of upcoming events, and social.

Tuesday Feb 9 – LitChat
7:30pm
Voice your thoughts on poetry, why you like them or why you don’t, and why you choose to write poetry if you are a writer. Jeanie MacFarlane, a longtime book reviewer and freelance writer, will share on Newfoundland Writing, having spent many summers there.

Wednesday Feb 10 - Peace Cafe Documentary night: The City
7:30pm – 10:00pm
To live away from polluted cores of big cities was once a championed cause of progressives: in one word, “suburbia”. Now, it is of course considered the antithesis of progressive politics. Step back into post-Depression America for an hour, as we collectively explore the populist ideals of the suburban propaganda film “The City”, and discuss alternative directions for our own future.

Friday Feb 12 – James North Art Crawl – The Nightmare Before Valentine’s Day: Opening of works by Adrian Jeffery
8 pm
This exhibition consists of a series of figurative paintings in oil. The prevailing mood of the work is gothic and oneiric. It has been said that “art is the unmasking of desire”. Perhaps too, it is the many masks that desire wears. The artist Adrian is the evil twin of Steven A. Jeffery, who lurks in the shadows, observing “life’s great pageant”. With music guests Martin Verrall and Raphael Keelan

The Crafty Monday folks are back with their special valentines sale at the Sky Dragon. Come see what they do on Monday Nights and maybe pick up a gift for the half that brings out the better in you.

Saturday Feb 13 – Farmer’s Forum and screening of
Food Inc.
2pm – 6pm
Hamilton Eat Local and the local branch of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) co-present our first ever FARMERS’ FORUM, with special guest and keynote speaker MIKE SCHREINER, new leader of the Green Party of Ontario and former Vice President of Local Food Plus. Members of Hamilton’s farming community are invited to come to gather and discuss issues crucial to the support and preservation of farming in our region. Non-farmers are more than welcome to attend and take part! Refreshments will be served between the forum and the film screening.

Tuesday Feb 16 - PancakeFest
10am – 4pm
Hamilton Partners in Nutrition presents PancakeFest! For $10, taste 4 different kinds of pancakes made from local ingredients but with recipes from around the world! Local maple syrup and lots of great toppings! Side dishes of sausage are available. Beverages extra. All money raised goes to fund local Student Nutrition Programs.

Tueday Feb 16 - Green Drinks

Green Drinks is a chance for people interested in or working on environmental issues a chance to kick back with a drink once a month.

Wednesday Feb 17 - Anarchist discussion group: Who Has the Right to Shape the City?
7pm – 10pm
A panel discussion on gentrification and urban renewal in Hamilton. How will the current campaign of urban renewal in the downtown core by the city of Hamilton play out for the working and poor who currently inhabit it? Come celebrate or support your Pisces friends birthday at the Sky Dragon Pisces Dinner Party. There will be food, organic beer, live drumming and lots of dancing. A child friendly event.
